This collection includes booklets, pamphlets, and reports primarily related to public healthcare, hospitals, and initiatives in Japan that were collected by Herbert K. Abrams. Some of the materials are reports that Abrams published in Japanese publications. A majority of the materials are in English, but there are some Japanese documents as well. There are also notes, one record, and a few other various items related to Japanese healthcare. Materials are arranged alphabetically by title.
Herbert K. Abrams was a doctor who dedicated his life to public health. He graduated with his MD from University of Illinois (1940) and went on to receive an MA in public health from Johns Hopkins University (1947). He worked in California, Chicago, and later came to Tucson and the University of Arizona in 1968.
Abrams was one of the founders of the UA College of Medicine's family medicine department at El Rio Health Center in Tucson and also founded the Union Health Service in Chicago. He also worked extensively in developing, assessing, and analyzing public health programs in China, Japan, and surrounding countries. His collection includes, primarily, his materials, research notes, papers, and other items related to Japan's public health policies and institutions.
