Using BYU Word and Phrase for Language Teaching: English and Spanish
With Adriana Picoral and Shelley Staples
This workshop will introduce participants to a popular and free online corpus resource for language teaching: Word And Phrase. This resource was created by Mark Davies, Professor of Linguistics at Brigham Young University (BYU). Two languages are currently supported by this tool: English and Spanish, drawing data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and El Corpus del Español, respectively. Participants will come away from this hands-on workshop knowing how to use Word And Phrase for the following tasks: 1) getting information (e.g., synonyms, collocation, and concordance lines) on words in English and Spanish; 2) analyzing frequency of words in their own texts; 3) using search and text analysis results to plan language learning activities for their specific classroom setting. Please bring your own laptop.
