Spring 2017 Student Research Symposium

Mexico - The Storytellers

Mexico: The Storytellers

Join us for a reception and presentations by students in Associate Professor Celeste González de Bustamante's U.S. Press and Latin America class. The symposium will open with a keynote by Lenin Martell. From 3:30-5:15 p.m., some students will be auctioning original photography.

Keynote: “Habemus public media in Mexico?”
In 2013, a new media law was enacted in Mexico. Amongst other things, it recognized for the first time the notion of “Public Broadcasting”. This important step meant a big challenge for non-commercial institutions while trying to transform themselves into public media. Martell will discuss the development of Public Media services in Mexico—especially their historical conditions and the current challenges they face.

Lenin Martell is a fulltime professor in the School of Political Sciences, at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM.) He coordinates the Writing Center, where he has partnered community projects with the Washington D.C. agency, One Global Economy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He conducted his graduate studies in Mass Communication at Boston University, Complutense University (Universidad Complutense) in Madrid, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City. Martell has been a guest professor at various universities in the country and the University of North Texas (UNT). Since 2013, he has co-directed the narrative literary “Heart of Mexico” program, organized by UNT and UAEM in various remote villages of Mexico. He has co-authored several books and published more than 20 academic articles on media and cultural studies. Prior to that, he worked as an interpreter and as a bilingual-education editor in Boston, and as an editor at Notimex and Editorial Televisa. Martell is currently the Audience-Ombudsman at the “Radio Educación” Public Radio station and co-hosts a weekly radio show at the same place. He appears regularly as a media and public affairs commentator on radio and television in the country.
