Hey Siri, What is Automatic Speech Recognition and Why Do We Care?

Co-presented by Joan Palmiter Bajorek, PhD Student in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (SLAT), and Dr. Michael Hammond, Professor of Linguistics and Human Language Technology (HLT)

Join us to learn about automatic speech recognition (ASR) and implications for current and future products. How do Siri, Ok Google, and Alexa work? Do you know that you can also talk to your fridge, thermostat, and car? Soon you may need to talk to a computer for an upcoming job interview. This talk is for a general audience, but we will also explore topics of machine learning and neural nets.
